Too much content

Do you suppose part of the problem Star Trek has is that there is just too much out there in both shows and movies? I know relatively little about Star Trek, but I am interested in it. Perhaps part of the problem is that I just don't know where to start, where to find everything, and what order to watch it in. There is just so much out there.

While Star Wars does have a lot of Expanded Universe content (a lot of which is now irrelevant), it is not necessary to enjoy the movies. And the movies have been few and far between, so the younger generations can easily catch up on them.
